Elementry School Should Be More Like Preschool! ( Invitations To Play With Open Ended Loose Parts)

Hello Friends!   My name is Theresa and I own a company called The Creative Campus. I am known as a "Creativity Producer and Professional Mess Maker" for homeschooling parents and caregivers. I work with Moms and nannies of children 2 years old and older.  “I Teach Growth Through Play”  The Creative Campus works with our clients to set goals for learning and Building New Skills . These goals encourage their children to learn and grow using play! Once we work together to set goals, I teach them how to create activities at home based on their child's skills and Interests to reach the goals they set. I wanted to talk to you about a concept that I have created and started working with this year. This concept is one that is perfect for kids from Preschool all the way through Elementary School. Play based Learning!  I believe that our kids are expected to sit for FAR to long during the course of their school day! because of this, I came up w...

Counting, Color Recogniton and Size Comparison! Apples, Leaves and Pumkins!

Image
Happy Fall Everyone! I love this time of year. There are so many fun learning experiences we gain at this point in the year. Pumpkin's and all their fun textures. Leaves and the different sizes and colors. The learning goes and goes! Because of this I wanted to share with you some fun learning activities I have created around these concepts. I have a fun leave/ Apple Game that I created when I was working with 3&and 4 year old preschoolers. I made these cute bushels with numbers on them and then I printed Leaves and Apples of different colors and Shapes. I labeled the bushels with numbers as well. Depending on the theme of the week, I lay out the bushels and I provide either the apples or the leaves ad I encourage the children to take turns picking a number card. Then we sing the child's name and say "picked an (color apple) from the apple tree"... and then they put that color in a bucket. Or we say "child's name" picked a certain number of ap...

5 Steps To Creating Educational Activities

5 Steps To Educational Success in   Early Childhood 1)       Every experience a child is presented with should be dictated by them. This means they should be given choices or options of items to engage with, but the child should be the one making the final choice. This teaches independent thinking and development of the creative process.   2)       All areas of development should be engaged in each activity that the child selects throughout the day.   3)       Always start learning experiences for a place of existing skill sets to create interest in further learning.   4)       Create lessons and experiences around the child’s preferences and interests. Meaning if the child is more interested in art, then use art and the different art modes for teaching and learning. If the child likes to engage in sensory activities, then use senso...

Alphabet Soup

Image
Hi Everyone! I hope your enjoying the New Year so far! I wanted to share a fun idea with you what I have used many times over the years. We all know how important it is to help our little friends learn Letters and Numbers. Well I wanted to come up with a way to do this using "Play", so I came up with "Alphabet Soup" Game. You use your sensory bin filling it with small manipulatives including bugs, cars food things like that. give each child a real life cooking spoon or ladle. then each person gets to take a turn getting one scoop of objects and putting them into their soup bowl. by saying the following rhyme I Scoop (name the object or letter for the very small friends 2/3) out of my soup with my little spoon.  OR for older friends I use this one.  " I scooped (name the object) out of my soup with my little scoop with my little spoon, and it starts with (child names letter). you can use this for children who are learning to read and spell as well. have them...

Image
Welcome Back Friends, I wanted to share another idea with you that I think is a lot of fun. this is something that can be used Indoors, Outdoors and even while you are out doing other tasks. "Scavenger Hunts". This is a great activity for Home and School! This is an activity that practices many skills such as Critical Thinking, Vocabulary Building, Attention Span and many other things. If your in the store and you want to keep your child engaged while you are accomplishing other tasks! you can give them a pictured list (depending on their age) and you can tell them OK we need to find the things on this list before I finish my shopping or whatever task it is you have your child along for. this gives your child a sence of importance and independence that they have a "Job" to do. https://www.facebook.com/thecreativecampuspreschool  like us and leave a comment saying you read my blog, and I will send you my newsletters and many other free goodies. you will also have a...

Discovery Play

Image
Hi Everyone! I hope your having lots of fun and learning new things every day! I wanted to talk to you about an activity that can be used in many ways. I call this "Discovery Play" I like to set out a substance like Shaving Cream or Jello and provide a variety of toys for my friends to play with IN the substance. This provides a sensory and play experience all in one. One of my favorite things to do with this activity is to set out Cars, People and even little furniture or food. This creates a fun opportunity for play and learning, because the children can use the items in any way they see fit. They can use the food to cook, or they can use all the toys and have the people cook using the food while pretending to be in a pretend place represented by the jello or Shaving Cream. I love to watch the creative thinking that children use when you provide them an open ended play experience like this. Activities like this can also open up opportunities to create stories and develo...
