Sensory Development

We all know that our senses are Sight, Sound, Touch and Smell/Taste. Each one serving its own individual purpose. Sight allows us to understand the world around us, sight also allows us to understand objects around us.  Hearing is the first  link to understand and develop language. Touch is our first defense against harm from our environment.  And smell allows up to develop taste over time. Our sense of movement creates our stability and sense of position in the world. This allows us to build coordination  and eventually learn to process information.  Soon we gain the ability to walk , run and play. To learn these skills one at a time it is most helpful to break large tasks down into achievable steps. Once one is achieved and mastered them introduce the next, until the task is complete.

For Children who are learning to use and develop visual skills, make sure that all the objects they will interact with are at child height to promote easy interaction and examination. This develops the child’s ability to recognize details. It is also a good idea to provide activities and toys that are bright colors and large size to attract the child’s attention and interest.

Sign language is a great activity for all children. Not only is it a new form of communication other then verbal , but you are also exercising your child’s eye/ hand coordination at the same time. This is a great way to engage children who are slow to speak. You can sign the words or tasks to the child and then say the word or ask out loud. Connecting the two forms of communication.

Lastly, I would like to talk about ways to enforce sensory experiences . Some children are sensitive to specific sensations and their fore avoid certain activities.  A few effective activities to work through this developmental stage is Cooking and Art. Art introduces many textures such as we slimy paint or sticky glue. Cooking
introduces things like cold eggs or warm soft butter or even flour.  This introduces your child to texture while they are distracted with the outcome of the task . Another all time favorite activity to work through this stage is Playgrounds! Who dosen’t  love playgrounds? For children who need to get used to textures and experience with them, this can be a great experience if introduced slowly. Swings in the wind. The Warm metal of the slide in the sun these are all wonderful ways for your child to have fun while experiencing new sensations.
